Tips for Doing a Self-Exam While Looking for Oral Cancer

Posted on 12/1/2025 by Greater Charlotte Oral and Facial Surgery
Woman looking in mirrorOral cancer can be a scary topic, but early detection is key to successful treatment. While regular dental checkups are crucial, it's also important to be proactive by checking your mouth regularly for any changes. Here are some tips for performing a thorough self-exam:

Preparation

1~ Find a well-lit area. Good lighting is essential for visualizing the inside of your mouth properly.
2~ Use a mirror. A handheld mirror or the bathroom mirror can be helpful for examining hard-to-see areas.
3~ Wash your hands thoroughly. This helps prevent the spread of bacteria.

Examining Your Mouth

1~ Start with your lips. Look for any changes in color, texture, or sores that don't heal.
2~ Next, check your gums. Healthy gums should be firm and pink. Look for any swelling, redness, or bleeding.
3~ Examine the inside of your cheeks and the roof of your mouth. Look for any white or red patches, sores, or lumps.
4~ Don't forget the tongue. Check the top, sides, and underside for any changes in color, texture, or sores.
5~ Finally, feel your neck for any lumps or swollen lymph nodes.

What to Look For

Here are some specific signs and symptoms of oral cancer to be aware of:

•  Non-healing sores or ulcers
•  Red or white patches
•  Lumps or bumps
•  Numbness or pain
•  Difficulty swallowing or speaking
•  Loose teeth
•  Changes in the fit of dentures

When to See a Dentist

If you notice any of these warning signs, it's important to see a dentist as soon as possible. Early detection of oral cancer can significantly improve your chances of successful treatment. Remember, even if you don't have any symptoms, regular dental checkups are essential for maintaining good oral health and catching any potential problems early.

Maintaining Good Oral Health

In addition to self-exams and regular dental checkups, there are other things you can do to maintain good oral health and reduce your risk of oral cancer:

•  Brush and floss your teeth twice a day.
•  Eat a healthy diet rich in fruits and vegetables.
•  Avoid tobacco use.
•  Limit your alcohol intake.
•  Wear sunscreen on your lips when outdoors.

By following these tips and staying proactive about your oral health, you can help protect yourself from oral cancer and ensure a healthy smile for years to come.

If you have any questions or concerns, don't hesitate to talk to your dentist. They are the best resource for personalized advice and treatment options.
