Is there a difference between oral surgery and maxillofacial?

Oral surgery refers to the surgical procedures performed on the teeth, gums, jaws and the entire oral and facial region, including tooth extractions and implants, gum grafting and jaw surgeries. However, maxillofacial surgery is a considerably more advanced type of oral surgery. Maxillofacial surgeons can perform complex surgical procedures that oral surgeons cannot perform in addition to normal oral procedures.
Examples of oral surgery procedures include dental extractions, implants and other gum surgeries. In contrast, maxillofacial surgery mostly deals with the maxilla, and facial traumas, abnormal or cancerous growths and tumors on the neck and head and facial cosmetic surgeries, and complicated oral conditions like difficult tooth extractions bite abnormalities, bone-fused dental implants and treating chronic facial pain.
Maxillofacial surgery is extensive and complex
Maxillofacial surgeries require surgeons with more advanced training in medicine than oral surgeries and are therefore more complex than the latter. In addition, maxillofacial surgeries are performed by a maxillofacial surgeon. At the same time, oral surgeries are performed by an oral surgeon. A maxillofacial surgeon can also perform them as they are extensively trained for dentistry and medical duties. Most often, and unlike oral surgeons, maxillofacial surgeries deal with trauma-related injuries of the oral and head regions.
Maxillofacial surgeons are extensively trained to perform more complex oral conditions and defects of the entire facial region, mouth, jaws, removal of cancerous tumors, traumatic conditions of the facial and maxilla region, corrective and cosmetic surgeries of the head, neck and face. In contrast, oral surgery is limited to surgical procedures of the oral region.
Oral surgery comprises both invasive and non-invasive procedures of the oral region and treatments like grafting. In contrast, maxillofacial surgery is an invasive operation like dental implanting or cleft and palate correction. It requires the surgeon to administer anesthesia for pain and discomfort during the operation.
