Temporomandibular Joint and Muscle Disorder (TMD)
The most common cause of jaw pain is TMD. Also known as TMJ, this condition affects at least two out of 15 people. The condition affects the temporomandibular joints, which are hinge joints on both of your jaws. There are several causes of TMD jaw pain, and most of them are connected to TMJ. Some of the common causes include irregular jaw movement, pain from muscles that control chewing, excessive stimulation of the jaws, and injury to the jaw joint, among others. Besides, damage to the muscles that control jaw movement is caused by factors like involuntary clenching of teeth, grinding your teeth overnight, and trauma to the joints caused by fall accidents.
Other Dental Problems
If you notice some jaw aches after chewing gum, it could also mean that you have other dental problems. In most cases, pain on either side of the jaw is traced to various oral health concerns. Some of the common dental conditions that tend to cause jaw pain include missing or misaligned teeth, tooth decay, gum disease, growth of wisdom teeth, abscessed tooth, or cavities.
