Does Ice Help Ease Swelling After Oral Surgery?

Does Ice Help Ease Swelling After Oral Surgery? After oral surgery, it is common for patients to have swelling. The swelling mostly peaks after 2-3 days and could cause discomfort during the healing process. While it is not possible to avoid this natural reaction from your body, there are several ways you can regulate the swelling.

Use Ice

One of the most reliable and effective ways of easing swelling is using ice. Use the ice packs to regulate or manage the swelling and discomfort during the first few hours after the surgery. You can do so by wrapping a few ice cubes or an ice pack in a towel and placing them on the affected part of your cheeks. How you use the ice pack will determine its impact and ability to reduce the swelling.

For the best results, hold the ice pack against the affected part of your cheeks from the outside. It should also be close to the area of surgery. We advise holding the pack in position for around 15 minutes for the best results. You should adhere to the 15-minute rule where you hold it against the affected area for 15 minutes, then keep it off for 15 minutes — continue with the same sequence for as long as possible. If you had surgeries on either side of your cheeks, you should use the 15-minute rule to change sides simultaneously.

Ice plays a vital role in reducing the swelling during the first 24 hours. After that period, it becomes less effective. Therefore, you should resort to using heat after using ice. This will help manage the swelling and reduce cases of discomfort. It also speeds up the healing process. Schedule a consultative appointment with us for more information on how ice helps reduce swelling after oral surgery.
