Oral surgeons are dentists. In addition, they spend four to six more years of specialized training to become a Doctor of Dental Surgery (DSS) or a Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD). There are approximately 5,800 oral surgeon’s in America.
What Does an Oral Surgeon Do?
Oral and maxillofacial surgeons undertake a range of treatments. The types of treatments they perform include surgery for facial injuries to the mouth, nose, jaw, cheekbones; congenital deformities; impacted teeth, and jaw misalignment.
Oral surgery procedures may be minor, routine procedures or comprehensive, major procedures and can be carried out in a dental office, or a hospital setting. Many routine dental procedures are carried out by oral surgeons, including impacted wisdom teeth and dental implant placement.

Tooth Extractions
