What is a Board Certification?

Board-certified oral surgeons are certified through the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (ABOMS). They are recognized as having maintained the highest professional standards and offer extensive expertise.

Is an Oral Surgeon a Dentist?

Oral surgeons are dentists. In addition, they spend four to six more years of specialized training to become a Doctor of Dental Surgery (DSS) or a Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD). There are approximately 5,800 oral surgeon’s in America.

What Does an Oral Surgeon Do?

Oral and maxillofacial surgeons undertake a range of treatments. The types of treatments they perform include surgery for facial injuries to the mouth, nose, jaw, cheekbones; congenital deformities; impacted teeth, and jaw misalignment.

Oral surgery procedures may be minor, routine procedures or comprehensive, major procedures and can be carried out in a dental office, or a hospital setting. Many routine dental procedures are carried out by oral surgeons, including impacted wisdom teeth and dental implant placement.

Oral surgeons carry out a range of procedures and treatments. A list of these treatments include the following.

Tooth Extractions

Tooth extractions may be simple or complex. If a tooth is impacted or has broken below the gum line it may require an incision in the gum line to remove it. Once the tooth is removed it will require stitches, and this is when the skills of an oral surgeon are required.

Dental Implants

With extensive knowledge of the jawbone and soft tissues in the mouth, an oral surgeon’s expertise is valuable for placing dental implants. Their skills may also be required for a bone grafting procedure prior to the implant treatment if there is bone loss in the jawbone.

TMJ Problems

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) problems are another area oral surgeons may be called to help with. TMJ problems may have several causes, including disease, injury, misaligned teeth, and bruxism (teeth grinding). Oral surgeons diagnose and provide treatments, such as surgery, or may work alongside another specialist, such as an orthodontist, to find the right solution.

Reconstructive and Corrective Jaw Surgery

Oral surgeons undertake orthognathic surgery to the jaw and reconstructive surgery to the facial bones following disease or accidents. Skeletal and dental abnormalities may be alleviated with jaw surgery to balance the facial appearance and correct conditions such as a receding chin, protruding jaw, and a misaligned bite. Jaw surgery may be indicated in some conditions such as obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) where the airway becomes obstructed as the jaw relaxes. In these circumstances, mandibular advancement surgery can be effective in relieving airway obstruction.

Treatment of Pathological Conditions

Oral surgeons also diagnose and treat oral diseases, such as cancer. This will include diagnostic tests and biopsies, as well as carrying out surgery to remove tumors and any reconstructive surgery that may be required.
