Foods that are bad for your teeth

Posted on 7/4/2022 by Greater Charlotte Oral and Facial Surgery
Foods that are bad for your teethDiet plays a crucial role in your dental health. The food you eat may either be beneficial to your teeth or have devastating side effects on your enamel. In this article, we highlight which foods to avoid for proper dental health.

Foods with high sugar content

When you consume food substances rich in sugar such as cakes, the bacteria in your mouth feed on the sugar and produce acids. The acids produced by these bacteria corrode and weaken your enamel causing it to break. In addition, the corrosion of your enamel leads to demineralization and leaves your dentin exposed causing your teeth to become sensitive. You should replace such foods with sugar-free choices so as to protect your precious teeth.

Acidic fruits and drinks

Fruits such as oranges, lemons and citrus are highly acidic. The acid in these fruits corrodes your enamel making it weak. Drinks such as sodas and energy drinks are also highly acidic. We recommend taking such fruits with water in order to wash away the harmful acids. You may also pair these highly acidic foods with less acidic ones such as cheese, nuts, and vegetables.

Highly pigmented food and drinks

Tea, coffee, and red wine may be refreshing, however, these drinks stain your teeth leaving them discolored and dull looking. The more you consume such drinks, the more discoloured your teeth become. You should therefore consider cutting down on your consumption of these drinks and shift to clear beverages.

Our dentists recommend extra keenness in your daily habits and the foods you consume in order to promote healthy teeth and gums. Incorporating fluoride in your oral hygiene routine will also promote remineralization of your enamel. Check us out for more tips of which food to avoid for proper oral health.
